Elon Musk and The Lavatory Lawsuit: A Curious Case of Comfort and Compliance at Twitter

In an unexpected twist to corporate narratives, a recently filed lawsuit brings to light intriguing details about tech billionaire Elon Musk’s operational style, his penchant for comfort, and a potential disregard for standard procedures. As bizarre as it may sound, the controversy orbits around a seemingly mundane fixture – a bathroom.

The lawsuit, filed by six former Twitter employees in the District Court of Delaware against Musk and X. Corp, Twitter’s holding company, claims that Musk demanded a bathroom be installed next to his office at Twitter headquarters. The rationale was not an eccentric preference for convenience but to prevent the need to wake his bodyguards whenever nature called in the middle of the night.

According to a Twitter engineer quoted by BBC earlier this year, at least two bodyguards accompanied Musk throughout Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters, even to the restroom. However, the late-night excursions to the restroom were apparently deemed disruptive enough to warrant construction of new facilities closer to Musk’s office.

The lawsuit goes on to recount a conversation between Steve Davis, the Boring Company CEO, and Joseph Killian, one of the plaintiffs in the case who had worked at Twitter for 12 years overseeing office design. Davis is alleged to have instructed Killian to commence work on the proposed restroom.

However, the story takes an unusual turn when Killian mentions the need to acquire the necessary permits for the construction. The lawsuit alleges that Davis responded dismissively, implying that the usual rules and regulations didn’t apply in this case. The lawsuit also claims Davis suggested the hiring of an unlicensed plumber to execute the task, circumventing the need for a permit altogether.

While such an approach may align with the tech billionaire’s well-known disregard for convention, it does pose serious questions about adherence to regulatory standards, sparking debates about corporate governance and ethics within the tech giant’s hallways.

The notion of Musk sleeping at Twitter headquarters is not new. Last month, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO revealed to the BBC that he sometimes sleeps on a couch in the library at Twitter’s headquarters. He told CNBC that he usually gets around six hours of sleep a night.

However, the bathroom tale has provoked a wave of amusement, bewilderment, and scrutiny. While the merits of the lawsuit’s more severe accusations, including fraud, breach of contract, and labor-rights violations, will be determined in court, it’s the unusual bathroom request that has captured public attention.

Contacted for comment, Twitter responded with an amusingly appropriate poop-emoji auto-reply. Meanwhile, Musk took to his favored communication platform, Twitter, to express his views on the matter. Dismissing the story as an “absurd scenario,” Musk tweeted that a far more serious concern would be his bodyguards sleeping instead of protecting him from potential threats.

Regardless of how this case plays out in court, it offers a glimpse into the unconventional world of one of the most enigmatic figures in tech. As is often the case with Elon Musk, even a seemingly mundane matter like a restroom turns into an event worthy of headlines. This incident underscores Musk’s unique, and occasionally controversial, approach to solving problems, even those that arise in the dead of night.
